Video: MLS All-Star goalkeeper Brad Guzan is interviewed while playing

Aug 2, 2018

Twitter users are not too sure about the latest innovation in sports broadcasting

Last night’s match between the Major League Soccer (MLS) All-Stars team and Italian giants Juventus won’t be remembered for the result, but for a new innovation in sports media.

ESPN interviewed MLS goalkeeper Brad Guzan, but not before the game, at half-time or afterwards. The discussion actually took place during the match, which ended in Juve winning 5-3 on penalties after a 1-1 draw.

Atlanta United No.1 Guzan was fitted with a microphone and an earpiece so he could talk to ESPN reporters while on the pitch. As Balls.ie explains, sports stars being “mic’d up” is not a new gimmick, but having a player wear an earpiece certainly is.

Could this one day happen in the Premier League?
