MUMBAI: A Nalasopara woman allegedly hacked her 27-year-old son to death with an axe when he harassed her for money to buy alcohol on Monday night.

The Valiv police said the deceased, Santosh Karela, who lived with his parents Balaram (52) and Jaya (47) at Dongripada, was an alcoholic and did odd jobs. He was their only child. His wife had left the house with their newborn son around six months ago.

The police said that when Santosh would be between jobs, he would harass his mother, who was employed as a maid, for money.

Jaya told the police that on Monday, at 9pm, when Santosh asked her for money to buy liquor, she refused. He then charged at her with an axe, but she snatched it from him and hit him on the neck several times, Jaya told the police. Santosh died on the spot.

Balaram, who was in the house, rushed out to ask his neighbours for help. They informed the police.

Jaya, who was sitting next to the body when the police arrived, has been remanded in police custody. The axe has been seized.
