To address the problem of unused toilets, the East Godavari district administration has launched a cultural campaign using folk artistes.
During a recent survey, the officials found that some of the residents from the rural pockets were not using the toilets, but keeping them as warehouses. In a bid to ensure Open Defecation Free (ODF) district, it was decided to create awareness among the public about the importance of using individual sanitary latrines.
Folk art forms like ‘Burrakatha’ were being made basing on the theme and the artistes were trained in the campaign. Special vehicles were designed in a way to provide transportation as well as dais to the artistes to give their performances in remote villages.
Collector Kartikeya Misra, along with the local elected representatives, flagged-off the vehicles at a programme held at the Collectorate here on Wednesday. Speaking on the occasion, he called upon the public to make use of the ISLs, as the ODF was possible only when the toilets were made into use.
