Tenders open for more Defence Housing in Coombs
Another 83 defence housing homes are to be built in Coombs as the federal government calls for tender applications.
The government is looking for builders to design and construct the terraces as well as complete civil, electrical, communications and landscape works on the site.
The development will be built in two stages on a block bound by Ingold Street, Castan Street and Fred Daly Avenue, backing onto the Bicentennial National Trail.
The builders contracted to undertake the building work must be accredited under the Australian government building and construction industry work health and safety accreditation scheme.
Construction will start in November this year, subject to approval.
Coombs is one of Canberra's newest suburbs in the Molonglo Valley, about 15 minutes from the city. According to the Australian Bureau of Statistics, about 1800 people live in the area, of that 5.3 per cent work in defence.
The suburb is yet to have its own local shops. More than two years after a development application was lodged for a local shopping centre, Coombs residents are still waiting.
The centre is still under construction. It includes room for a supermarket of 1000 square metres, a cafe and retail shops.
Tenders must be submitted via the AusTender website. Applications close September 7.
