GUWAHATI: The Assam police on Thursday said that three cops, including two woman constables, were injured in a scuffle that resulted when police tried to stop members of a Trinamool Congress party delegation at Silchar’s Kumbhirgram airport.

The Trinamool delegation had reached Assam to assess the situation in the state in the wake of the publication of the second draft of the National Register of Citizens. Nearly 40 lakh people of the state have been left out + of the draft NRC published earlier this week.

"All the eight TMC members have been put under preventive detention for violating 144Crpc. They will be kept at Silchar airport and will be released tomorrow under order from the district magistrate. We are making arrangements for the night stay at the airport," Assam additional DGP (SB) Pallab Bhattacharya said.

Assam DGP Kuladhar Saikia said that the decision on arresting the TMC members will be taken after learning their next course of action. "During the scuffle with the TMC delegation team, two of our lady constables were injured. We cannot allow deterioration of the law and order situation,” Saikia said.

The DGP said that the TMC delegation was informed on Wednesday by Cachar district administration not to visit Assam so that the existing peace and harmony in state is not disturbed. However, the TMC members were reluctant, he added.

"When they arrived at Silchar airport, a senior police official of additional DG rank requested them to stay inside the airport and return to wherever they had come from because there were 144 CrPC prohibitory orders clamped outside. However, they did not talk cordially and pushed our people which led to the scuffle,” Saikia said.

Saikia said that two FIRs have been filed against Mamata Banerjee + at Guwahati and North Lakhimpur. “We are looking into the contents of the FIRs. We will take appropriate action as per legal provisions,” he said.

Earlier, TMC supremo Mamata Banerjee had claimed that members of the party delegation, including women, were manhandled at the airport and accused the BJP of imposing "super emergency" in the country.

The BJP was exposed by this incident, she said and sought to know under which law was the TMC delegation stopped.
