LUDHIANA: The state taxation department’s investigation wing seized 4.5kg gold worth Rs 1.4 crore from Ludhiana resident Rahul Verma who had hidden the precious metal in one of the doors in his car.
Assistant excise and taxation commissioner V P Singh said, “We had got information that gold will be transported to Ludhiana by road on Wednesday. We formed several teams one of which was sent to Delhi. It followed the car of the accused in which gold was hidden.”
The department also took help of Khanna police and laid nakas on the Khanna-Ludhiana road.
The car (PB10GL-7282) in which Rahul was travelling was signaled to stop, but he did not do so.
“We were able to stop the car at the next naka near Gurdwara Manji Sahib and upon thorough search of the vehicle, we found 4.5 kg of gold hidden in the backdoor of the car,” V P Singh said.
Rahul Verma could not produce any legitimate document for purchase of this gold and any taxes paid on the same. “We have also initiated the next course of action by issuing a notice to the accused and GST close to Rs 5 lakh will be recovered from him along with imposing penalty,” the official added.
