The Drag-U-La Dragster From The Munsters Is Looking For A New Home

The Munsters went off the air in 1966, but the iconic Drag-u-la from the show is going up for auction.

Created by Dick Dean – who also worked on the ECTO-1 ambulance from Ghostbusters and the Ford Explorers in Jurassic Park – the Drag-u-la is a hand-built dragster that features a coffin for a body. The model also has organ-style exhaust pipes, a domed roof and custom lighting units.

Mecum didn’t mention performance specifications, but the car reportedly has a 4.7-liter V8 engine that was sourced from a Ford Mustang. The engine apparently produces 350 hp (261 kW / 355 PS) and is connected to a four-speed manual transmission.

The Drag-u-la made its television debut in 1965 when it was featured in an episode called Hot Rod Herman. Following its appearance in the show and several movies, the model become part of the Hollywood Star Cars collection.

While the Drag-u-la is over fifty years old, it was restored at the request of Al Lewis who played Grandpa Munster. Lewis wanted to drive the car one last time before he died, so George Barris’ east coast representative spent three months bringing the car back to its original condition.

Unfortunately, Lewis’ health had declined and he couldn’t take the model out for a spin. However, he did see the restored car before he passed away in 2006.

There’s no estimate for the auction price, but the Drag-u-la still has plenty of star power and has been signed by George Barris, Butch Patrick (Eddie Munster) and Pat Priest (Marilyn Munster).
