Woman dead after house fire in Sydney's east

A woman is dead and a man has been taken to hospital after a house fire in Sydney's east.

Emergency services were called about 6.20am to Carrington Road at Waverley, where they found a house well alight.

The first fire crews arrived to find thick smoke billowing from the rear of the house, a Fire and Rescue NSW spokesman said.

The semi-detached house was well engulfed in fire, the spokesman said, and first responders quickly called for back-up.

Even though fire crews were quick to enter the home, the woman died at the scene.

An 86-year-old man was found outside the house suffering from smoke inhalation and was taken to Prince of Wales Hospital, an ambulance spokesman said.

While the main fire had been put out, the Fire and Rescue NSW spokesman said five crews continued working to extinguish the smouldering fire in the roof space.

It was unclear whether the neighbouring semi-detached house needed to be evacuated.

Officers from the Eastern Suburbs Police Area Command have begun an investigation, and a report will be prepared for the coroner.

The Fire and Rescue NSW spokesman said police had requested the assistance of the fire investigation unit to uncover the cause of the blaze.
