Nagpur: The Government
Dental College and Hospital (GDCH) has received first instalment of Rs2.25 crore out of the allocated Rs22.47 crore in May this year for Super Speciality Hospital (SSH) and upgradation of the college. The college is planning to lay the foundation stone in 2-3 months.
Dr Sindhu Ganvir, dean of GDCH, told TOI that as promised earlier by the state government the release of the money was announced during the monsoon session of the state legislature. The new building will be called as Golden Jubilee building as the college completed 50 years this year.
The process to secure building plan sanction from the Nagpur Municipal Corporation has started and it will be completed in just a few days. Tendering process will also begin soon and bhoomipujan is likely to be performed in September or October.
“After the upgradation, comprehensive dental care will be available under one roof. It will bring all the super specialities in dental field at one place. The building has an FSI of 2.5. At present, we have planned ground-plus-five floors but later we will increase it to seven,” said the dean.
All the departments in the new building will be completely digitalized. All reports including X-ray will be available to doctors in each speciality in their rooms for reference. The CAD-CAM machine stationed in the college will be shifted to the new building. The SSH will also have an ‘implant centre’ where all types of dental implants can be performed.
“Nowhere there is a department of maxillofacial prosthesis but our SSH will have this department where all the congenital defects of the face can be corrected using prosthesis. This will be an exclusive speciality,” said Dr Ganvir.
Dr Ganvir also explained the importance of department of forensic odontology, which is scientific study of diseases of the teeth. This department also helps in identifying the age of a person from his teeth and mandibles. This department should be there in all dental colleges, he said.
A skill development laboratory will also be there which will bring revenue to the college and the government through training of various types.
Medical Council of India (MCI) has been raising the issue of lack of required space for pre-clinical labs. Hence, the SSH has plans to have a complete floor of pre-clinical labs. These will have three pre-clinical labs in conservatory dentistry, prosthetic dentistry and the orthodontics.
Above all, there will be four lecture halls of 800 sq ft which can accommodate 50 undergraduate and 56 postgraduate students. This will also rectify the biggest deficiency pointed out by the MCI.
