School hasn’t called me yet to inform of the incident, says victim’s father

Kailash Patel Kumavat, father of Naresh Patel, 11, who was grievously injured in roof collapse at New Century Public School at Vivekananda Nagar, is spending anxious moments at the entrance of Apollo Hospitals in Jubilee Hills. He is hoping to hear the news that his son, now in ICU, is recovering.

A textile trader by profession, Mr. Kumavat says he was at his shop at Kukatpally when an acquaintance informed him of the ghastly incident.

Surrounded by relatives who have arrived at the hospital, he says, “I wish I had known earlier. But how could I? The school did not even inform me of what happened.”

No call from school

Mr. Kumavat has been at the hospital since around 7 p.m. and he claims that he has not received a call from the school. “This is the least they could do. The safety of our children is important. It was their responsibility to inform us. It’s 9 p.m. now and they haven’t called me yet,” he says.

Mr. Kumavat’s wife, who is at home, is anxious too. “She could not come here as she cannot bear it. She is with my daughter who is in class I. She goes to the same school.”

“At the moment, nothing is more important to me than my son’s health. I am concerned only about my son. I don’t have time to think of anything else,” he says.

Nikita, another victim of roof collapse, too is admitted at Apollo Hospitals. Her parents, however, were not available to comment.
