Emergency Food Supply Cell to curb hunger deaths

A senior official of Department of Food Supply and Consumer Rights during Media Samvad stated that to control hunger death rate that has increased due to several technical glitches in Public Distribution System (PDS) involving Direct Benefit Transfer (DBT) scheme, the department has planned to start Emergency Food Supply Cell under ‘Right to food’ where 10 kg rice will be made available to the Below Poverty Line (BPL) families.

The official informed that in rural belts, the concept will be monitored through Gram Sabhas whereas for urban localities, the work will be done at the level of respective ward offices. The Central Government had allocated Rs. 42.90 lakh recently for initiating this service.

Furthermore, the officer stated that Nagri Block is getting ration food supply through PDS and the coverage is 92 per cent there.
