This 1961 Chevrolet Impala Restromod Isn’t Your Typical Wagon

Monterey Car Week will see a number of high-profile auctions offering rare and exotic automobiles worthy of the Pebble Beach Concours d’Elegance. However, Mecum’s auction will also include something decidedly different – this 1961 Chevrolet Impala restomod.

Dubbed the “Double Bubble,” the car is a highly customized model which was crafted by the Greening Auto Company. While the wagon doesn’t have a double bubble roof, it gets its name from the fact that the top was constructed out two different models – a “Bubble Top” Impala and an unnamed 1961 Pontiac.

Besides the unique wagon shape, the Impala has a custom front end that has been lengthened. The fender flares have also been modified and they fit in nicely with the car’s overall design.

The exterior styling might not win everyone over, but the cabin looks amazing as it features a two-tone design and custom leather front seats. The dashboard is also custom-built and it features metal trim as well as retro-inspired gauges. Other special touches include custom door panels, a Vintage Air system and a carpeted boot with load rails.

Power is provided by a big block engine that has been bored out to displace 7.7-liters. As part of the transformation, the engine was equipped with new pistons, an upgraded crankshaft, Edelbrock cylinder heads and a fuel injection system. Lastly, the engine was equipped with custom headers and an exhaust which connects to Flowmaster mufflers.

The engine is connected to a five-speed manual transmission which sends power to the rear wheels via a Ford 9-inch rear end with a Detroit Locker. Other performance features a new four-link suspension, Wilwood brakes.and an upgraded rack and pinion.

Due to the extensive customization, Mecum expects the car will sell for between $225,000 – $275,000 (€192,939 – €235,815 /  £171,406 – £209,496).
