Tirupur: The food safety and drug administration on Wednesday seized 1 tonne of adulterated tea powder from a depot in the city on Wednesday. The depot was sealed by the officials who carried out an inspection.
Acting on a tip, food safety officers Balamurugan and Sathish carried out an inspection at the tea dust unit owned by Murugesan at Samundipuram.

“The officials found adulterated tea dust being prepared at the depot,” said the district FSDA designated officer K Tamil Selvan.

“Murugesan was mixing colouring agents and unidentified material with substandard tea dust. He was packing them in more than five different so-called branded labels like Lion Green Fresh Assam, Maharaja tea, Supreme tea and Super Assam,” he added. The officials seized about 1 tonne of such adulterated tea dust from the depot.
