A 27-year-old man in a village in Pataudi killed himself on a live web stream on Monday evening following an altercation with his wife who left home along with their two kids.

According to police, Jatoli resident Amit Chauhan began a live Facebook video shortly after his wife walked out around 7pm, and told viewers that he would kill himself on camera, and asked them to share the video with others.

Over the next hour, Chauhan prepared a noose and hanged himself from a ceiling fan while nearly 2,000 people watched. None of them alerted the police, officials said.

“We received a call from one of the villagers around 10 am and a team from Heili Mandi, which is six kilometers away from Pataudi rushed to the spot. The family had already cremated the body in the village and they said he was mentally disturbed and was undergoing treatment for last six months,” Sumit Kuhar, deputy commissioner of police (Crime) said.

The police said they had begun an investigation especially since the family did not report the death. Ashok Chauhan, Amit’s father, said he received information about the death around 9 pm when the wife went to ask for dinner. “He was mentally ill and was taking medicines prescribed by PGIMS, Rohtak. He used to fight with his wife and neighbours every day and I had stopped living with him due to his conduct,” he said.

Kuhar said Chauhan was alone in the room when the incident happened. The family has refused to lodge a complaint and said no one is responsible for his death.

“When the wife returned, she informed the neighbours who saw that the incident was recorded on mobile and he had placed the mobile phone on a table in his room. Later, it was found that victim had gone live on Facebook while taking the extreme step,” he said.
