Panaji: Chief Minister Manohar Parrikar on Tuesday said he would bet that eggs are not made of plastic, and assured the Assembly that he will get some samples tested by laboratories, including a facility operated by the Centre.

He was responding to Congress MLA Aleixo Reginaldo Lourenco’s allegations that eggs made of artificial substance are being sold in Goa.

“I have brought three eggs to show you. These are plastic eggs which are being sold in Goa. This is harmful to the health,” Mr. Lourenco said, and demanded a probe into their sale.

He also said he along with a former MLA had come across plastic eggs, while claiming that the Food and Drugs Administration is slack on the menace.

The CM said he will get the plastic eggs checked, urging the Opposition legislator not to indulge in speculation. “I will get them checked in all laboratories. There cannot be a plastic egg.”

Mr. Parrikar, who is an alumnus of IIT Bombay, said he ruled out the possibility of a plastic egg. “I have done engineering and I am a student of science. I can tell you positively, it cannot be made of plastic... I can bet on it,” Mr. Parrikar said.
