Cape Town - Cricket South Africa's (CSA) new T20 tournament, formerly known as the T20 Global League, has been reduced from eight teams to six.

That was the news from CSA CEO Thabang Moroe on Tuesday as he announced the signing of a new Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with the South African Cricketers' Association (SACA). 

The Global League was due to have its first edition over November and December last year, but the tournament was canned in the absence of a broadcast deal under the leadership of former CEO Haroon Lorgat. 

Moroe has confirmed that the tournament will finally be launched at the end of 2018, though it will operate under a different name. 

And, according to a report on Cricinfo, the new competition will only have six franchises. 

The report indicates that the CSA board approved the number of teams on Saturday, but it has not yet been confirmed where those franchises will be based. 

Interested parties will now have to bid for a side, with analytics agency Nielsen Sports overseeing the process. 

"There will be certain criteria applied by Nielsen which will involve monies, the ability to pull crowds, infrastructure around you and governmental support. The process will be independent," Moroe said.

The six-team RAM SLAM T20 Challenge, meanwhile, is also set to go ahead in the 2018/19 season.
