THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: The southwest monsoon will remain active in the state for two days. Monsoon intensified on Monday evening due to the presence of an upper air cyclonic circulation off Orissa coast. A man died and several houses damaged due to monsoon related fury.

As per the weather alert issued by IMD on Tuesday evening, the rains are likely to continue for the next 48 hours and reduce in intensity thereafter. Warnings have been issued to fishermen venturing into the sea as high waves in the range of 3-3.3 metre are expected on Wednesday along Kerala and Lakshadweep islands.

The south west monsoon has been 16.9 % excess in the state since its onset in May end. Against a normal rainfall of 1,375.9 mm rainfall, the state has received around 1,608.39 mm rainfall. On Tuesday, heavy-to-very heavy rainfall were reported in various places such as Piravom 17 cm, Mancompu 13 cm, Chengannur 12 cm, Neyyattinkara and Thodupuzha 11 cm each, Thiruvananthapuram city, Nedumangad and Ottappalam 9 cm each, Alappuzha, Kollam, Vaikom and Perumbavur 8 cm each and Vadakkancherry 7 cm.

Shutters of dams such as Peppara, Aruvikkara and Neyyar in Thiruvananthapuram district, were opened resulting in overflow of Neyyar and Karamana rivers. Five houses were damaged during heavy rainfall in Kattakkada taluk.

Seventy-four-year-old Georgekutty John was found electrocuted near Muthoot bank at Nalanchira on Tuesday morning. The Mannanthala police said that the power cables were broken during heavy rains at night and John was suspected to have electrocuted during his morning walk.
