Fishers on vessels already in sea report safe weather

Despite the rough weather alerts and the subsequent warning issued by the district administration, the majority of the mechanised fishing boats in Kozhikode district went fishing on Wednesday.

Boat owners said they had let the boatmen leave the shore after cross checking the prevailing weather with fishing boats that were already at sea.

“Though some of the boats were initially reluctant to go into the sea, they too left for the job after checking the situation with others,” said M. Vasu, a boat owner from Beypore.

He said the sea was safe and the market would get sufficient supply of fish from Thursday.

C. Musthafa, another boat owner from Beypore, said fishers were not ready to wait for long for getting clearance from the authorities. “All the boats were already loaded with essential items and fuel to resume work. Those who were a bit reluctant to start the work by Tuesday midnight following security alerts, left the coast early on Wednesday morning,” he said.

Not so happy

The boat owners also said the fishers were not so happy over the catch they got after the trawling ban period. Most of them got pink perch and prawns. The actual situation would be clear only after the return of bigger trawling boats, they said.
