Could it be the year of the hatchbacks with the Volkswagen Polo, Ford Fiesta and Focus, and Suzuki Swift already launched both internationally and locally.

The Korean automaker is next to join the bandwagon. Built in Slovakia, Kia's new third-generation Ceed hatch adds to the list and offers consumers more variety compared to its predecessor.

Kia South Africa says the Ceed has not yet been confirmed for the local market but will most certainly be put up for consideration.

So, what's new on the international model?

The most notable change is in the looks department with sharper styling cues coupled with a wider stance and lower centre of gravity compared to the previous model.

It also features a host of engine options ranging from the a 1.4-litre 73kW to the more powerful 102kW version. A 48V mild hybrid system also forms part of the range which will be available later in 2018 for international markets.

The interior is just as impressive as the outside with a 7" infotainment screen the pick of the bunch. It also includes a number of safety features like Emergency brake and lane following assistance.

While there is no official confirmation if the Ceed will be coming to South Africa, it sure would give the Golf a run for its money.
