The Tamil Nadu government has informed the Madras High Court that video conferencing facilities would be provided in 233 court complexes in the 32 districts of the state.
In an affidavit filed before Justice T Raja, the Home Department said Rs 22.83 crore had been allocated for procurement of 233 video conferencing equipment and accessories for this purpose in two phases.
This had been done as per the directions of the Supreme Court, it added.
The affidavit was filed in response to a petition by H Ramakrishnan seeking a direction to the government for implementation of the March 9, 2017, order of the Supreme Court to issue suitable instructions to all district courts to use video conferencing for recording evidence.
The petitioner, residing in London, had moved the court saying he was unable to attend court proceedings in Cuddalore district and seeking video conferencing facility for recording his depositions.
The Judge posted the matter after two days.
