FALL RIVER — Police cited a female motorist for failure to yield to a pedestrian in a crosswalk after her car struck a 49-year-old man crossing the Alfred J. Lima Quequechan River Rail Trail.

He suffered minor leg injuries and was transported by ambulance to Charlton Memorial Hospital, said a statement from police spokesman Detective John Robinson citing a report by Patrolman Aaron Souza.

It said the Barnstable man was walking the trail near 420 Quequechan St. shortly before noon and as he approached the street he activated the pedestrian crosswalk lights.

He saw the traffic stopped with the lights flashing and began to walk across the road along the rail trail, police said.

“As he crossed Quequechan Street, a 2009 Nissan Versa operated by a 73-year-old Fall River woman accelerated and struck him, knocking him to the ground,” police wrote.

They did not identify the driver or the pedestrian, saying the latter lives in the Marstons Mill area of Barnstable on Cape Cod.

The driver told police she did not know what the flashing lights meant, and after stopping her car she accelerated and struck the pedestrian.

Police said the man’s injuries were non life-threatening.
