Haryana Chief Minister Manohar Lal on Tuesday said that students’ union elections would be held in colleges and universities of the state in the last week of September, or, in the first week of October.

Issuing directions in this regard to all deputy commissioners and superintendents of police through video-conferencing here on Tuesday, he asked them to make all arrangements to ensure that the elections could be held in a peaceful manner.

Education Minister Ram Bilas Sharma, Chief Secretary DS Dhesi and senior officers were present in the meeting.

The elections to students’ unions in colleges and universities of Haryana have not been conducted for the last 20 years. These elections were banned by the then Chief Minister, Bansi Lal, in 1996 in view of the unruly and violent behavior of some students group at that time.

The students’ election had remained a key poll issue in Haryana.

INSO, the student wing of Haryana’s main opposition party, Indian National Lok Dal had held several protests in the past over the demand of students’ body polls in the state.
