VGL officials booked for death due to blast in house

Vadodara: A case of causing death due to negligence was registered against three officials of Vadodara Gas Limited (VGL) at Gorwa police station on Tuesday night. Three accused Stephen Khristi, Kirit Shah and Vishnu Bhatia were arrested by police.
The case was registered as three persons died due to burn injuries suffered from a blast in a house at Ellora Park last month. The blast took place due to gas leakage in the house even as the owner of the house had got the supply disconnected in 2010. Dhruvesh Dhanani, who owns a pizza restaurant on Race Course Road, gave the complaint to the police as the three deceased were working at his restaurant.

According to the complaint, Dhanani, who lives on Gotri Road, had taken an apartment in Ellora Park on rent for lodging of Kiran Sheikh, Ashmat Sheikh, Rupesh Yadav and Ali Hasan, all of whom were working in his restaurant. On midnight of July 20, a blast took place in the house when the four residents lit a mosquito coil in the house.

The fire brigade had doused the fire and all of them were rushed to SSG Hospital. Dhanani went to the house later and found that the gas pipeline did not have a valve and there was a leakage. He then called the fire department officials and police for probe. The gas supply was then disconnected by VGL.

Few days later 19-year-old Yadav, Kiran (19) and Ashmat (21) succumbed to their injuries. The owner of the house informed Dhanani that he had got the gas supply disconnected in 2010.

“The owner had got the supply disconnected yet the supply was continued by VGL therefore it is clear there is negligence on the part of three accused,” said a police official.
