FOXBORO – The Patriots were already facing an uphill battle when it came to putting receivers on the field to start the 2018 season. That won’t get any easier after Wednesday.

According to ESPN, the Patriots placed Jordan Matthews on the injured reserve. The veteran wide receiver suffered a hamstring injury during Sunday’s practice. According to the NFL Network, it was considered “significant.” It's possible that the Patriots eventually release Matthews with an injury settlement, which would make him a free agent.

With Julian Edelman slated to serve a four-game suspension and Danny Amendola in Miami, the Patriots are going to look a lot different offensively to start this season. That’s one reason why many thought that Matthews would have an impact. Unfortunately, injuries have derailed this once-promising receiver’s career.

In three seasons in Philadelphia, Matthews hauled in 225 passes for 2,673 yards. He ad a career-high 85 receptions for 997 yards in 2015. Last year, however, Matthews dealt with multiple lower body injury and caught only 25 passes for 282 yards in 10 games with the Buffalo Bills. That led him to signing a 1-year, $1 million deal with the Patriots this offseason.

Before he went down, Matthews looked like he was starting to catch on – he even started to take more reps with Tom Brady and the starting offense before suffering the injury last Sunday.

So far, the Patriots are having some bad luck when it comes to their receiver position. Malcolm Mitchell is still not practicing and dealing with a knee injury. Kenny Britt has yet to practice in camp after suffering a hamstring injury in minicamp. The team also released Cody Hollsiter due to a back injury.

All the injuries have led the Patriots to signing two new receivers this summer – Devin Lucien and Paul Turner – to go with Chris Hogan, Phillip Dorsett, Cordarrelle Patterson, Riley McCarron, Braxton Berrios and Edelman.

The Patriots might not be done adding receivers, either. According to multiple reports, the Patriots tried out veteran receiver Eric Decker on Tuesday.

After placing Matthews on the IR, the Patriots signed fullback/tight end Henry Poggi to fill their 90-man roster.
