Water flow in tail-end areas inspected

Principal Secretary of the Public Works Department S.K.Prabhakar continued to inspect different parts of Tiruvarur and Nagapattinam districts on Wednesday to verify whether water released in the Cauvery has reached tail-end areas.

In Tiruvarur district, Mr. Prabhakar visited the tail-end areas in Muthupet union such as Keezhakadu Thoppathanaveli, the Bamini regulator and Jambavanodai Koraiyar regulator.

Later, he said that 74 desilting works were taken up in Tiruvarur district at an estimated cost of ₹3.79 crore. Besides, 52 construction works on irrigations structures were taken up at a cost of ₹3.61 crore and 39 kudimaramathu works at a cost of ₹4.75 crore. Totally, 165 works have been executed at an investment of ₹12.16 crore for renovating and strengthening the irrigation infrastructure in the district.

The water released in the Cauvery has reached the tail-end areas of the district. Officials have been instructed to ensure that there was no seepage along bunds of water courses. PWD officials have been directed to ensure effective water management and distribution depending on the requirement of farmers.

In Nagapattinam district, he inspected irrigation canals in the tail-end areas in Thalaignayiru and Vedaranyam unions. He inspected the tail end regulators at Mulliyaru and Adapparu. He reviewed the progress of construction of a check dam being built across the Adapparu at Kallimedu at a cost of ₹10 crore and the check dam being built across Harichandra river at Mudaliappankandi sanctioned at a cost of ₹4.65 crore.
