GUWAHATI: The final draft of National Register of Citizens (
NRC) was released without any trouble on Monday under very tight security arrangements that were made by the Assam government.
While the Centre had sent 220 companies of armed police force to maintain law and order, prohibitory orders were imposed in vulnerable districts as a precautionary measure. “Assam Police want to thank people of the state for making the NRC draft release a peaceful event. People’s cooperation was extraordinary. We are sure people will maintain peace and harmony,” DGP Kuladhar Saikia said. Police took additional security measures and installed CCTVs at NRC Seva Kendras, he added.
The Indo-Bangla bordering districts remained peaceful with no untoward incidents being reported. Raunak Ali Hazarika, DIG (Border), Assam Police, said, “There was peace in the bordering districts on Monday. People in bordering areas are aware of their rights and the process of claims due to massive awareness campaigns.”
Police are keeping an eye on social media and warning people against making controversial statements. Police commissioner Hiren Nath said, “Action will be taken if anybody tries to create disturbance and spread rumours. Even if someone does it as a prank, action will be taken.”
