The Red Sox placed ace left-hander Chris Sale on the 10-day disabled list with left shoulder inflammation, retroactive to July 28, the team has announced.

Brandon Workman has been recalled from Triple-A Pawtucket. Brian Johnson will start Thursday’s game against the New York Yankees at Fenway Park.

Red Sox general manager Dave Dombrowski called it mild inflammation and said he’s hopeful that Sale can start at Toronto next week.

"If this was something more serious, I would tell you," said Sale. "We're not hiding anything."

The pitcher said the inflammation is "in the same general area where he usually gets sore." He added that he was "pretty upset" by the decision to put him on the DL, but he ultimately accepted it as best for the team.

Sale, 29, is 11-4 with a 2.04 ERA (32 ER/141.0 IP) in 22 starts this season. He entered today leading the majors in strikeouts (207), opponent batting average (.179), opponent OPS (.530), and WHIP (0.87), while his ERA is the lowest in the American League.
