Traditional fishermen like ramponkars are doing brisk business by selling local varieties of fish in the fish markets in Margao with majority of the people in South Goa still preferring to eat local fish.

On Monday, a lot of local fish basically from Velsao-Danddo coastal areas was brought to the Margao wholesale fish market.

Joaquim Fernandes, a fisherman from Velsao said, “I have netted the fish by venturing into the sea with a small boat early morning. More fish was found on the Betul coast. Mackerels and shrimps were caught in the net. This is pure fish. The people who used to ignore us and our fish and preferred packaged imported fish, have now realised the importance of the local fresh fish.”

He claimed that they are denied entry in the fish market by some agents and as such, they often have to sell the fish at the source.
