Two persons, including a Delhi University student, were arrested for allegedly cheating a woman on the pretext of getting her relative admitted to a DU college, the police said on Sunday.

The accused have been identified as Hashim Alam and Vipin Kumar, they said.

Both of them completed their undergraduation from DU’s Swami Shraddhanand College, the police said. Hashim is currently a final-year MA student at Rajdhani College, they added.

A Manipur-based woman got Hashim’s phone number from a friend, who claimed he could get her relative admitted to any DU college, the police said.

After Hashim assured the woman that her relative would get admission in DU, she came to Delhi with the relative. The deal was fixed for ₹one lakh and the victim transferred the amount to Hashim’s bank account, the police said.

“The accused had promised her relative admission to Swami Shraddhanand College but failed due to the transparent admission procedure. The woman filed a complaint after the accused refused to return the money,” a police officer said.
