The Chhattisgarh Sanchar Kranti Yojana (CG-SKY) will help security forces better coordinate their efforts to fight insurgency in Bastar, officials informed.

Incidentally, the LWE areas coincide with the fifth schedule areas. Traditionally, communication has been least developed in these areas. Road, rail and telecom penetration are all very weak making it extremely difficult for the security forces to fight the problem of extremism. Improved network will help in many ways, they informed.

The project would also help the process of expediting the mainstreaming of people in the LWE areas. This will also help lift the morale of the security forces.

The Chhattisgarh Sanchar Kranti Yojana (CG-SKY) project is a major initiative taken by Government of Chhattisgarh aimed to improve the mobile penetration in the State.

The scheme entails distributing a mobile phone to each rural households through PDS and bring them into the mainstream. The revenue potential from the phone connections will ensure that the telecom service providers augment the network at their own cost.

The Chhattisgarh Infotech Promotion Society (CHiPS) has hired a Project Management Unit (PMU) for strategic advisory and management of CG SKY project. The PMU is to provide the necessary facilitation support for each system (or sub system) of the project.

In the tribal hinterland, radio continues to be the best mode of communication. Even basic mobile phones have a built-in AM/FM Radio. Near universal access to a radio among the rural population will make it easy to disseminate awareness about the various welfare schemes of the Government, officials informed.
