SRINAGAR: The number of pilgrims who paid obeisance at the Amarnath cave shrine in south Kashmir Himalayas this year has surpassed last year's figures, officials said on Monday.

"Today, on the 33rd day of the ongoing Shri Amarnathji Yatra, 3,827 pilgrims paid obeisance. Since the beginning of the pilgrimage on 28 June, as many as 2,62,314 pilgrims visited the shrine," a Shri Amarnath Shrine Board official said.

He said during last year's 40-day yatra, the number of pilgrims who visited the holy cave shrine was 2,60,003.

This year that figure was surpassed in just 33 days, and despite interruptions due to torrential rains, he added.

The rush to Amarnath saw a significant drop last year after an attack on a bus carrying pilgrims in Anantnag district.
