GURUGRAM: A 60-year-old cleaner was arrested on Sunday for molesting an 11-year-old girl inside a lift of a Sector 90 condominium. The accused, identified as Sribaas Burman, was produced before court on Monday and sent to 14-day judicial custody.

The survivor, student of a well-known school, lives with her parents and younger brother on the 16th floor of the condominium on Dwarka Expressway. She was molested by the cleaner when she took the elevator from her floor to go to the ground floor.

According to police, at around 3.30pm, the survivor and her mother had returned from the market in an app-based cab. They had booked it with provision to pay in cash, but the driver was not carrying change. “Mother and daughter went to their flat, from where mother sent her daughter to pay the cab driver,” said a police officer of Sector 10A police station.

The accused was already inside the elevator when the girl got in. He started a conversation with her, inquiring about her family. “He then tried to sexually assault her,” said the officer.

In her complaint, the mother wrote the accused had touched her daughter inappropriately and even threatened her.

Traumatised, the girl narrated her experience to her parents, who filed a complaint at women’s police station, from where it was transferred to Sector 10A. “She started crying on reaching home and told us what had happened, saying she had tried to resist, but the accused kept touching her inappropriately,” reads her mother’s complaint. “We sent a police team to the spot, who arrested the accused and produced him before court on Monday,” said the policeman, adding the accused was booked under sections of the Protection of Children from Sexual Offences (POCSO) Act.

Cops said the accused is a history-sheeter, who had recently been booked for theft along with his daughter-in-law, who also works in the same society. Child welfare committee chairperson Shakuntala Dhull said survivor was counselled, her statement recorded on Monday. “We’ll do more counselling if needed,” said Dhull.
