McLaren 720S Goes Like The Clappers, Sets Lap Record At French Track

The McLaren 720S isn’t only a fast-accelerating beast in a straight line, but very capable on the track as well.

Backing up the latter statement is a video released by MotorsportMagazine, which shows the British exotic model attacking Circuit de Nevers Magny-Cours, a track located in central France nearly 250km (155mi) from Paris.

However, that’s not all the 720S did in between the apexes of the aforementioned track, as it also managed to set an unofficial lap record.

The 720S completed the run in 1:47.05, approximately one second quicker than the Lamborghini Huracan Performante and McLaren 675LT, with professional racing driver Romain Monti at the helm and shod with Pirelli P Zero Trofeo R tires.

There’s a downside to the actual footage, though: the positioning of the camera that filmed the entire run, which reveals the steering wheel and digital instrument cluster mostly, rather than the track up ahead.

The 720S replaced the 650S last year and is only the third model in the company’s Super Series range (second, if you count the 650S as a seriously improved MP4-12C).

It is powered by a modified version of McLaren’s twin-turbo V8 engine, whose displacement was increased from 3.8 to 4.0 liters. The unit delivers 720PS (710hp / 530kW) and 770Nm (568lb-ft) of torque to the rear wheels through a dual-clutch seven-speed automatic transmission for a 0 to 100km/h (0-62mph) sprint in 2.9 seconds and a 341km/h (212mph) top speed .
