PM lauds ragpicker’s son who made it to AIIMS Jodhpur

JODHPUR: It was a moment of pride for Asharam Choudhary, his parents and AIIMS Jodhpur staff on Sunday when Prime Minister Narendra Modi in his 46th edition of ‘Mann Ki Baat’, talked about Choudhary. Reason: Son of a ragpicker from Madhya Pradesh, Choudhary made it to AIIMS Jodhpur.

Sunday’s edition was dedicated to the youth of the country and their achievements. Modi congratulated Choudhary and said, “I came across news of Asharam Chowdhary from Madhya Pradesh who belongs to an extremely poor family. He cleared the exam in the first attempt to get admission in MBBS at AIIMS Jodhpur. His father is a ragpicker.”

Choudhary, son of a ragpicker, Ranjit Singh from Dewas in Madhya Pradesh is now a student of first year MBBS in AIIMS Jodhpur. He got through in his first attempt. On July 23, Choudhary took admission in the institute. He was accompanied by his father Ranjit Singh and mining inspector of Dewas, Ramesh Solanki, who had been sent by the Dewas district magistrate to carry out the admission formalities.

Director of AIIMS, Sanjeev Misra, along with the entire team congratulated him and assured him of all the cooperation in the institute. “We have decided to provide him books and other required things from AIIMS considering his achievement and financial condition,” said Misra, adding that they were proud to have him in the institute.

While talking to media during his admission, his father Ranjit Singh said that his objective was to ensure that his son could study but had no idea as to what he would do. “When he explained to me what he has achieved, I was speechless. I saw the building where he will study now, it is beyond my imagination,” said an emotional Ranjit Singh.

After the admission, Asharam said that he was thankful to everyone who helped him in reaching here. He added that now it was his duty to meet their expectations and make everyone and this institution proud.

Asharam was one of the 75 students selected by Dakshina Foundation from entire country for scholarship and residential classes at its Pune campus. He secured all India 707th rank and 141th rank in OBC category.
