2019 Mercedes-AMG C63 S Is Still An Armchair With Booster Rockets – And That’s Great

The facelifted version of the C-Class has been launched, and immediately our attention was drawn to the big boy of the range: AMG’s new C63 S.

The changes are focused more on the aesthetic side of things, as well as introducing new tech features, leaving the oily bits mostly unchanged.

The thunderous twin-turbo 4.0-liter V8 still produces 503hp and 516lb-ft of torque in the S model, but is now paired to a new nine-speed automatic with a wet clutch instead of the previous model’s seven-speed, torque-converter automatic transmission.

The torque-vectoring ‘eDiff’ that was previously exclusive to the C63 S is now standard fit to the ‘base’ C63 models, too, while AMG has given its hulked-out C-Class a nine-stage traction control system similar to that found in the fire-breathing AMG GT-R.

Mercedes-AMG reckons it’ll do the classic 0-62mph (100km/h) in as little as 3.9 seconds, while top speed for both the Saloon and Coupe is set at 180mph (290km/h).

The interior has been updated with new trim options, a new steering wheel with galvanized shift paddles and special display buttons, a 12.3-inch digital instrument cluster with three AMG-specific display styles and a new 10.25-inch high-definition infotainment system.

Given that no other rival offers a V8 engine, the 2019 Mercedes-AMG C63 S continues its career as the hot-rod of the segment. It may not be the sharpest tool of its class, but the mighty AMG is still unbeatable for pure fun.
