President Kovind, Prime Minister Modi, Congress chief Rahul Gandhi enquire about M Karunanidhi's health

The 94-year-old veteran leader was suffering from urinary tract infection and is being treated at home.

CHENNAI: Even as Tamil political leaders, activists and members of the film industry of Tamil Nadu visited the Gopalapuram residence of DMK president and former chief minister M Karunanidhi in Chennai on Friday to enquire about his health, a host of national leaders, cutting across party lines, shared wishes and prayers for his recovery. President Ramnath Kovind, Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Congress president Rahul Gandhi were among those who reached out to the DMK patriarch’s son and party working president MK Stalin to enquire about Karunanidhi’s health.

“Spoke to Thiru Karunanidhi’s family members on the phone and inquired about his health,” President Ramnath Kovind tweeted. He added, “Wishing the former Chief Minister of Tamil Nadu, a veteran of our public life, a quick recovery.”

While inquiring about the health condition of the five-time Chief Minister, who entered the 50th year on Friday as head of the DMK, the Prime Minister offered any assistance that might be required help for his treatment.

Currently, in Africa, Modi tweeted, “Spoke to @mkstalin and Kanimozhi ji, enquired about the health of Kalaignar Karunanidhi ji and offered any assistance required.”Congress president Rahul Gandhi called up DMK working president and Karunanidhi’s son MK Stalin to enquire about the condition of the DMK patriarch whose health had ‘slightly declined’ on Thursday as per a medical bulletin issued by Kauvery Hospital whose doctors are providing treatment and care to him.

 

Meanwhile, senior political leaders, including R Nallakannu, Tha Pandian (CPI), Tamilisai Soundarrajan and H Raja (BJP), Vaiko (MDMK), film lyricist Vairamuthu and film-maker Bharathiraja, visited Gopalapuram to enquire about the health of Karunanidhi who had scripted several Tamil films. Actor-turned-politician Rajinikanth, currently abroad, called Stalin and asked about Karunanidhi’s health. Vaiko, who had a long association with the DMK president, hoped that he would return to health and his magnetic voice would be heard soon. CPM general secretary Sitaram Yechury and CPI national secretary D Raja contacted Stalin, to ask about the health condition of his father.
