Construction of the new multi-super speciality hospital coming up at the Government Medical College campus in Thanjavur is nearing completion and would be declared open at the earliest, Health Minister C. Vijaya Baskar said here on Saturday.
The hospital with about 10 super speciality departments and nearly 300 beds was sanctioned at a cost of ₹150 crore.
Inaugurating a dialysis centre with 15 additional dialysis units and a geriatric ward at the medical college hospital, Dr. Vijaya Baskar said Cath Labs have also been sanctioned and soon cardiac procedures such as stenting and angioplasty could be performed at the hospital.
He said dialysis units were being expanded in all medical colleges and district government headquarters hospitals across the State. The geriatric wards have also been receiving a good response as senior citizens are offered priority for diagnosis and treatment.
Answering a query on the recent death of a woman during child birth at her residence in Tirupur, Dr.Vijaya Baskar said the government was keen that such practices were eradicated and hence the Health Department had preferred a police complaint. However, Tamil Nadu ranked high in institutional delivery and 99% of child births were institutional deliveries and of this, nearly 70% of child births were in government hospitals, he added.
To another query, the Minister said the State government was strongly opposed to the National Medical Commission Bill and had already expressed its views against its provisions.
