Complex Endoscopic Cardiac Procedures performed at Max

Max Hospital Dehradun is now performing minimally invasive treatment called EndoVascular Abdominal Aortic Aneurysm Repair (EVAR). EVAR is a procedure used in treatment of abdominal and thoracic aortic aneurysm. An abdominal aortic aneurysm is a condition in which the aorta swells like a balloon. Aorta which is the main artery in our body passes through abdomen (tummy area) carries oxygen-rich blood away from heart to the rest of our body and brain, the doctors say.

Known as the 10th leading cause of mortality and morbidity, with fewer than 20% of people surviving a rupture, abdominal aortic aneurysm (AAA) is affecting people above the age of 50 and patients who have undergone bypass surgery. But early detection through ultrasound and (EVAR) treatment has shown a significant improvement in the survival rate, the doctors claim.

Citing a recent case, Dr Preeti Sharma, principal consultant, Department of Cardiology, said, “The patient’s aorta, dilated from its normal size which is ideally 3 cms, can be life- threatening if it bursts open or ruptures. These types of cases are treated by open abdominal surgery which is highly invasive and takes longer recovery time. But in this case, we treated the patient with a minimally invasive technique known as EVAR – Endovascular Abdominal Aortic Aneurysm Repair.” She further added, “It is designed to be placed without surgically opening the aorta that’s why it is a less invasive procedure.”

Dr Rahul Prashad, medical superintendent, Max Hospital, Dehradun, said, ''Max Hospital has always been ahead in bringing international class quality care to Dehradun for convenience of the residents of Uttarakhand. We are proud to have such expertise in cardiology which has successfully performed complex cardiac procedures in the past as well.”
