VARANASI: In a stern action, UP Basic Education Board has ordered removal of unauthorised prefix 'Islamia' from several state-run primary schools in Ballia district, which were also having their weekly holiday on Friday instead of Sunday. The board has also ordered a probe into the matter.

An education department official said 15 schools operating as 'Islamia Primary Schools' have got rid of the prefix fearing action. The prefix was unwarranted and unauthorised. Furthermore, these schools would now remain open on Friday and close on Sunday as was the established norm, the official added.

"We came to know that about 15 government primary schools in the district have been operating as Islamia Primary Schools since their inception. Now, we have got 'Islamia' removed from the names of these schools. All concerned have been directed to follow the guideline and timetable prescribed by the UPBEB," Santosh Kumar Rai, district basic shiksha adhikari of Ballia, told TOI on Friday.
