LUCKNOW: Riding a two-wheeler without
helmet during heavy rainfall proved fatal for a city youth and left two others injured in a pile-up on
Sitapur highway under BKT police station on Friday.
Abhishek Verma (20), a resident of Khargapur locality in Gomtinagar, died on the spot while his friend Mamtesh (20) riding pillion is seriously injured and battling for life at
KGMU Trauma Centre. Ram Dayal (20) riding the other bike with a girl also sustained minor injuries. Police said that the four friends were returning home around 12.30am after dining at a dhaba. When they reached Saraya turn powerhouse, Verma's bike hit a stationary car which had rammed a mini-truck in a pile-up. Verma failed to spot the pile-up due to heavy rain.
Dayal coming from behind rammed Verma's bike. Before they could move another car hit them from behind. Verma got tossed on the car in front while Mamtesh fell on the road along with Dayal. The pile-up led to a traffic jam on the highway.
Police spokesperson A K Singh said that UP 100 vehicles took the injured to a
private hospital which admitted Dayal and referred Verma and Mamtesh to KGMU Trauma Centre.
The doctors at Trauma Centre declared Verma brought dead. He was a water supplier, said police. Mamtesh is crically injured and is battling for life. Both Verma and Mamtesh sustained head injuries. Singh said that bike riders and those on pillion were not wearing helmets.
