CHENNAI: Kamaraj (57) of Madurai, stated to be wanted by police in connection with the rape of a 12 year-old child in Chennai, has moved the Madras High Court seeking anticipatory bail. The case created much shock as it was alleged that the victim had been sexually assaulted over seven months by several men working in the gated community. So far, police had arrested 17 persons.

After coming to know of the arrest of 17 persons said to have been involved in the offence, Kamaraj moved the advance bail plea claiming that he apprehended arrest by Chennai police for offences under sections 307, 506 (ii) of IPC and sections 5, 10 and 12 of the POCSO Act.

When the plea came up before Justice A D Jagadish Chandira, no one represented the petitioner. Government advocate submitted that the application is liable to be dismissed as it does not reveal how the petitioner is connected to the case.

Recording the submission, the judge adjourned the plea to July 31. He would dismiss the plea if no one represented the petitioner on that date, he said.
