In the midst of formalin controversy that rocked the state, assistant commissioner of the market department of Municipal Corporation of Greater Mumbai Sangita Asnare and her team of engineers visited the recently-renovated retail fish market of the South Goa Planning and Development Authority (SGPDA) to take a look at it as the market has been built on the lines of Dubai markets.

Earlier, the MMC chairperson, councillors and the chief officer held a meeting with the team led by Asnare wherein she explained how efficiently they work in Mumbai with the population of around 1.2 crore.

She also explained how the collective efforts of the corporators and the officials had borne the fruits by way of banning thermocol use and that Greater Mumbai has become 70 to 80 per cent  plastic-free in the markets.

“We saw WhatsApp messages and videos of this market and decided to come and see for ourselves. We will be suggesting this market model for our proposed new markets,” Asnare said after visiting the SGPDA retail fish market in Fatorda.

On a query over pothole repairs, Asnare said that the Corporation has classified the work into two  categories — resurfacing  of roads and new constructions. She said that potholes are filled up with cold mix.

Meanwhile, explaining how the fish is checked in Mumbai markets, Asnare said that a team of assistant superintendent of market, deputy superintendent of market and market inspectors  together carry out checks in the markets and FDA officials are informed in case of any consumer complaint over quality of fish.

“There are instructions to take serious action on those who try to sell adulterated fish,” she said, while replying  to ‘The Navhind Times’ query.
