The government will bring various social welfare schemes currently being implemented separately for palliative care, beggars home, orphanage, destitute persons etc under an umbrella scheme from August.

Coming out with the information while replying on demand for grants on social welfare department in the state assembly on Friday, Parrikar said that the government has made a provision of Rs 30 crore in this year’s budget under one head for various types of social oriented activities and the particular umbrella scheme will be declared in August.

“The scheme will be run by non-governmental organisations and the government will financially support it by providing financial assistance of Rs 3 crore to each institution. The government will also lend support to create infrastructure like shelter home and permanent home facilities to such privileged people,” he said.

The Chief Minister also assured the Leader of Opposition Chandrakant Kavlekar that he will take up the demand for inclusion of Dhangar community in scheduled tribes with the central government during his visit to New Delhi on August 6 or 7.

Kavlekar blamed the Chief Minister for not taking up Dhangar issue seriously as Parrikar has not mentioned anything about it in his formal reply to demands on social welfare.

When Quepem MLA pointed out the same, Parrikar assured that he will take up the issue with the Centre soon.
