A local Vigilance Bureau court on Friday acquitted Punjab Chief Minister Capt. Amarinder Singh, facing charges of corruption in transferring land of Amritsar Improvement Trust to a private developer.
The court accepted the closure report submitted by the Vigilance Bureau in October 2016 and ordered the discharge of the persons named as accused in the ten-year-old case.
Besides Capt. Singh, 14 other accused — including fomer Legislative Assembly Speaker Kewal Krishan — have also been acquitted.
The case, which was registered during the Akali-BJP regime in 2008, accused Capt. Singh and others of indulging in corruption, when the Congress was in power, while granting exemption for transferring over thirty acre land of Amritsar Improvement Trust to a private developer.
Capt. Singh, who was present in the court, said “justice has finally prevailed after a decade in the Amritsar Improvement Trust case. It’s been proved that allegations were motivated, borne out of sheer political vendetta. Politics has no place for such motivated action against opponents. Thank the almighty and my legal team.”
