THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: Chief minister
Pinarayi Vijayan has asked the police to take action against those involved in online rage against
Hanan Hamid, a young student whose video of selling fish in college uniform has gone viral.
The chief minister said a young girl trying to support her family and fund her own studies should not be targeted.
"I am really proud of the girl that she found her own source of income to continue her studies. Only those who have come across a similar fate in the life can understand this hardship. The people who are defaming her in the social media cannot recognise her achievement," wrote the chief minister on his Facebook page.
The resolve shown by Hanan is a model for others and hence the government is committed to giving all protection to the girl, Pinarayi Vijayan said. He has asked the district collector of Ernakulam to provide all security to the girl.
Vijayan also warned those targeting the girl on social media with strict action.
Former chief minister and
administrative reforms commission chairman VS Achuthanandan has also asked the cyber police to register cases against those who are involved in the campaign against Hanan through social media. Defying all odds, Hanan has been facing life with much courage. The confidence shown by the girl should be appreciated and hence all the attempts to defame her is highly condemnable, said Achuthanandan.
Hanan used to sell fish after her studies. A report in the media earned widespread appreciation in the social media, where she was seen selling fish while still in her uniform. But at the same time a campaign had started in the social media claiming that her story was untrue and baseless. Several abusive comments and threats have flooded the social media.
However, her college authorities has come out in her support claiming that she hails from a poor background and used to make money by doing several jobs after her class hours to fend for her studies.
