China eyes news sharing with India

NEW DELHI: Three months after PM Narendra Modi and Chinese President Xi Jinping's informal summit in Wuhan, Chinese ambassador to India Luo Zhaohui visited public broadcaster Prasar Bharati and emphasised the "high importance" China attaches to mass outreach in India.

Zhaohui said India's soft power through Bollywood and yoga had made inroads in China, and described how both nations have planned to engage with people. Echoing the Chinese ambassador's views on the importance of people-to-people contacts, Prasar Bharati chairman A Surya Prakash explained how India's public broadcaster had engaged with Chinese state television in recent years through an MoU for content sharing. Prakash also spoke of the potential for further engagement through co-production of content.

The two sides agreed to take the conversation forward with Prasar Bharati chief executive Shashi Shekhar Vempati suggesting sharing of news could be another area of exchange by the two nations' public broadcasters.
