Three held for attack on police vehicle

The Karumathampatti police have detained three persons who were allegedly part of the gang which waylaid a Kerala police vehicle near the Kaniyur toll plaza on Salem-Kochi road and rescued an accused from them recently.

Those detained have been identified as V. Ilavarasan (26), I. Vigneswaran (23) and R. Velumuthu (21). Ilavarasan, who had been working in a juice stall at Thadagam, was arrested by the police first following which the other two were also held.

The police said that the three persons were part of the gang that rescued P. Maharajan (41), a native of Natesan Nagar near Virugambakkam in Chennai, from the custody of Kochi City Police near Kaniyur toll plaza around 11.30 p.m. on July 22. The police are on search for at least 12 persons who were involved in the incident. Maharajan is a main accused in a money lending case being investigated by the Palluruthy police in Kochi.
