K Srinivasan
Chennai:
K Srinivasan, caterer
I was born and raised in Manjikuppam in Cuddalore. I studied till Class 10 but couldn’t continue, as my family was not able to afford the fees for my further education.
I have been through several hardships after my son was diagnosed with a genetic disorder. He had to undergo eight surgeries. He is 24 years old now and has one more surgery coming up next week. It is after his medical condition that prompted me to get into serving society.
I also work in a catering company in triplicane. He exemplifies life and its essence for my family and I. I received a lot of help during the time of crisis from many people. I have donated blood as many as 40 times so far. I am O-ve and remain in constant touch with organisers of blood donation drives.
Following the recent accident on the tracks at St Thomas Mount where four youngsters were killed and many injured, I rushed to the Government Royapettah Hospital to see if someone was in need of blood. I also reach out during times of calamities like flood and cyclone for relief operations. I have been staying in Chennai for more than two years.
Apart from volunteering, I also believe in the power of pen and poetry. I have written verses related to alcoholism and safe riding, apart from talking about the responsibility of children towards parents. I hand out these poems to youngsters as I meet them. This is my bit to change society and make it better.
