Residents seek revision of opening and closing time

The park at Ramachandran Street, Sathosh Nagar in Mugaliwakkam reopened last week after eight months of renovation.

With well-grown trees, flowering plants and lawns, the park is quite inviting. The amenities at the facility include walkways and stone benches with backrest.

An outdoor gym and a gazebo for yoga and meditation have been created.

A play area for children and a volleyball court are part of the refurbishment work.

Washrooms, LED lights, RO water supply, rainwater recharge wells and a parking lot are among among the other amenities.

Residents say this is the biggest park in Mugaliwakkam and has the potential to draw many visitors from surrounding neighbourhoods.

“Earlier, we had to walk on the road. There used to be garbage bins along the way,” says K. R. Ramakrishnan, a resident of Ramya Nagar. Residents welfare associations have requested the Greater Chennai Corporation to revise the opening and closing time of the parks.

“At present, the park opens at 5 a.m. and closes at 9 a.m. We wanted it to be kept open till 11 a.m. In the evening, the park is opened at 4 p.m and gets closed by 8 p.m. This should be revised to timing of 3 p.m. to 9 p.m.,” says R. Sethuraman, joint secretary, Sri Muthumari Amman Nagar Residents Welfare Associaiton.

According to a Corporation official, the park, which is spread over 5,211 sq.mt., has been renovated at a cost of Rs.85 lakh.

A portion of the park has been handed over to Chennai Metro Water Supply & Sewerge Board.
