Defunct signal creates traffic chaos

G. Bhuvaneshwari, a resident of Mandaveli, dreads having to cross the intersection of St. Mary’s Road, C. P. Ramaswamy Road and R.A. Puram Third Cross Street, thanks to the non-functional traffic signals.

Motorists and pedestrians have urged the Chennai Traffic Police (CTP) to repair the defunct traffic signals and facilitate a pedestrian signal at the intersection. At present, only the amber lights blink.

During peak hours, the intersection witnesses heavy vehicular traffic as the crossroads facilitates easy connectivity to Anna Salai, Greenways Road and Kamarajar Salai.

“The continuous flow of vehicular traffic from the crossroads makes it difficult to negotiate the intersection. Moreover, the non-functioning signals results in congestion,” Bhuvaneshwari says.

S. Ashok, a motorist, said, “Motorists coming from C.P. Ramaswamy Road take a free right turn towards St. Mary’s Road in Alwarpet, much to the dismay of others coming from R.A. Puram Third Cross Street and St. Mary’s Road, Abhiramapuram, as they have to brake suddenly.”

It is a common sight to see motorists from St. Mary’s Road and R. A. Puram come at a high speed, throwing caution to the wind.

Traffic signals regulate vehicular movement in a proper direction. Given the magnitude of vehicles passing through the intersection daily, steps should be taken at the earliest to repair the signals.
